Couples in India are Getting Divorced at an Increasing Rate
Americans are surprisingly getting divorced at the rate of 50%. This means that half of all couples who marry eventually dissolve that relationship. Even though Christianity, the main religion in the U.S., does not condone divorce, we have seen the incidence continue to rise. Christians aren’t the only ones being affected though. This is a phenomenon that is gaining momentum all over the world.
Research has been done to study the effects divorce has had on Indian Hindu culture. Until 1955, marriage was forbidden in the culture. After the passage of this law, people could be granted a divorce for various reasons such as adultery and cruelty. The divorce rate has risen to 2% after this law was passed.
Researchers have used various statistics in order to study the effects of divorce. Most of the cases of divorce happened for people who were no older than 35 years old. Older people usually feel more bound to the ancient traditions as opposed to the younger generations. It was also learned that those with higher education were more likely to divorce than those who had not attended college. However, they were hesitant to assume anything with this data.
When it comes to the divorce rate, occupation was another factor. When people have a profession that requires them to be around members of the opposite sex a lot, they’re more likely to divorce. Only a low percentage of Indian women have joined the workforce, though, because of the fact that male members of their families will not permit it. Lack of jobs and income often means that women who might be inclined to divorce cannot afford to do so. You’ll find that divorce is much more common when it comes to the Brahmin caste, which is the most affluent.
Unlike marriages in the United States, 73% of Indian marriages are arranged by members of the couple’s families. In India, courtships is something that isn’t even considered. Mates are chosed by family members based on many different criteria. Before the nuptials, most couples don’t even get to spend much time with each other. Many Americans make the mistake of going into the marriage expecting too much. Doc No. 34Sdlhgsdl -sds
